Sadly we share news of the passing of a cherished family members. Emma Marie Gaskin Tibbs, also known as Marie, was born in Boston, Virginia on November 13, 1928 to William Thomas and Emma Sue Gaskins. Marie departed this life peacefully at Piney Grove Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Kernersville, NC on February 4, 2022. She was married to the late William H. Tibbs IV (Tibbs) and this union produced their son, William H. Tibbs V (Bill).
Marie attended Marion Smith High School in Accomack, Virginia. After graduation she went on to obtain her B.S. Degree in Education at Elizabeth City Teacher’s College. Marie was number 1 in her graduating class. Later, she received her master’s degree at New York University.
Marie and Tibbs (as he was affectionately called) were married on July 4, 1957 in Niagara Falls, NY and moved to Westchester County in 1958.
She taught Special Education in numerous schools in Westchester County, NY. Marie retired at age 65 in 1993. She was a member of Union Baptist Church in White Plains (Greenburgh), NY where she served as a member of the Trustee Ministry. She was active with the Silhouettes Organization (Wives of Members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.) New Rochelle/White Plains Alumni Chapter throughout her life.
She and Tibbs traveled extensively throughout their marriage. During their travels, they helped plan and witness the marriage of their son, Bill and Gloria Vance in Hawaii in 1994. In the year 1996, they were blessed to have twin grandchildren, Celia Marie and Willian Henry VI.
As their health started to decline, they moved to Kernersville, NC to be close to family and where they could spend time with their beloved grands, Celia and Will.
Surviving family to cherish her memory is her son, William H. Tibbs V (Gloria); grandchildren, Celia Tibbs of Kernersville, NC, and William H. Tibbs VI of Winston Salem, NC; niece, Barbara Y. Evans of Elmsford, NY; and a host of grand and great-grand nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who loved her dearly.
Emma Marie Gaskin Tibbs is the wife of William H. Tibbs, IV; who is the son of Troy & William H. Tibbs, III; Grandson of Matthenia “Emma” Coffey; and G/Grandson of John Henry Coffey.
